Effect of Biochar and Straw Application on Nitrous Oxide and Methane Emissions from Eutric Regosols with Different pH in Sichuan Basin: A Mesocosm Study

Adoption of crop residue amendments has been increasingly recommended as an effective management practice for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing soil fertility, thereby increasing production. However, the effect biochar and straw on nitrous oxide (N2O) methane (CH4) in soils differing pH remains poorly understood. Three treatments (control (i.e., no amendment), maize straw, derived from straw) were therefore established separately with different levels, classified follows: acidic, neutral, alkaline. N2O CH4 investigated using a static chamber–gas chromatography system during 57 days mesocosm study. The results showed that cumulative significantly higher acidic than other experimental soils, values ranging 7.48 to 11.3 kg N ha?1, fluxes ranged 0.060 0.089 C inconclusive results. weak negative correlation was observed between log NO3-N either or same parameters moderate correlation, suggesting likelihood these could mitigate GHGs result increase soils. It is also possible, given alkaline nature biochar, incorporation had significant buffer acidity, effectively by >0.5 units.
